Are you fascinated by the world around you and curious about other cultures? My sixth grade students are as well, but have little knowledge of cultures outside of the U.S. and need more materials to enrich their world geography experiences.
Our school is located in a suburban community and benefits from active parent involvement.
Like most schools in today's economy, we have dealt with growing class sizes and many changes in our schedule and team structure. The school has faced a budget shortage for the last several years.
My Project
I am requesting contemporary fiction books about other cultures, maps, and calculators. Having multicultural books available to them, as well as basic supplies like maps and calculators, allows my students to access our world geography curriculum more easily.
I hope to add an eclectic mix of materials to my world geography class to enrich my curriculum in a myriad of ways. I do a multicultural literature unit with my sixth graders in order to expose our students to the joy of learning about world cultures through reading. I want to add to my class library so my students can continue to learn about other cultures through a variety of fiction and nonfiction.
I also want to add to my map collection so that I am able to surround my students with visuals so they can gain an understanding of the effect of physical geography on culture. Calculators will help us figure out data about other countries, such as population density and the currency exchange rates.
I am always looking for ways to help my students "travel" the world and gain a perspective of what life is like in other countries.
These materials will enrich our learning experiences in a variety of ways.
