This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been a New York City public school teacher for 7 years. I have taught Pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade. This year I am teaching Second grade. I wanted to teach Second grade for a variety of reasons. The main reason is that second graders come in to your classroom as first graders and they leave as third graders.
To me, that is a monumental jump socially and cognitively. I want to be there to support and guide these children through the most exciting time in their life thus far. The reason I have chosen to use this book at home and in my classroom, is because I feel like something has happened to children's imagination. Times are changing and more often than not kids want to turn on the TV, pick up a video game remote, or jump on the computer. I feel like the simple things are getting lost and forgotten with all of these new technologies and imaginations are getting lost as well.
In the book "Nothing to Do" by Douglas Wood, there is a story told about a boy who complains he has "nothing to do" and how he gets over being bored by finding many things to do in the world he lives in. Surprisingly, none of these activities involve a TV or video game or computer! By giving a copy to each child in my class I hope to help get children and their families to think outside the box! I want to have a bulletin board in my classroom that lets children write about their adventures and how they used this book to help them jump start their imagination!
