This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an enthusiastic group of fourth graders who are each as unique as they are lovable. My students are eager to learn and grow. Their passion for learning comes out in so many ways, from sharing their opinions on our class read alouds to expressing their thoughts in feelings in their reflection journals. Although all my students have their own strengths and growth areas, we all particularly love our daily independent reading time where we turn on our twinkle lights, get cozy, and curl up with good book.
My students thrive in environments where they feel known, loved, and valued.
As a class we are striving to build that space for each other. My students come from many different backgrounds and have many different needs, but each day we are committed to coming together and supporting one another in our learning journey.
My Project
As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child." Teachers and families make up the fabric of that village to ensure that all children are given the supports necessary to reach their full potential. However, with ever changing standards and methods of teaching content, families often find it challenging to effectively reinforce classroom concepts at home. One of the biggest complaints I hear from families is that they want to help their students at home, but the strategies and approaches we teach today are so different from what they learned in school that it is difficult to provide support. As a teacher, I want to make sure that my students are set up for success, and part of that is setting up families for success. With this iPad and Apple Pencil, I will be able to record the lessons I am teaching my students (think Khan Academy style videos) to share with families.
This technology will allow me to open the doors of my classroom for families and students to learn, review, and practice classroom content at home.
In addition to supporting families in familiarizing themselves with what we are learning in the classroom, this technology will support the learning of some of my most vulnerable students. Many students in my class are chronically late or absent. With the fast pace of our curriculum it is often difficult for them to catch up. By digitizing many of my lessons, students will have the opportunity to revisit lessons they may have missed and limit the loss of learning.
I know how eager families are to be partners in their children's education and I can't wait to see the growth that will happen as a result of strengthening the ties between home and school.
