it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students at our academy are some the most hardworking young adults I have ever worked with. Everyday I have students coming to my classroom before school, during lunch, and after school to work on their piano skills, perfect their bass lines, and hone their drum grooves.
Students at our academy come from working class families with 85% of our students eligible for free lunch.
80% of our students are hispanic with many English Language Learners.
For most of our students, the music room is the only space they have access to musical instruments as well as a the freedom to express themselves through song and dance.
This past year our middle school classes focused on learning the basics of keyboarding, drumming, and singing through popular music. Our 9th grade classes dived deeper into keyboarding, drumming, and composition through the use of Garageband. The 10-12 classes focused on playing in groups and put on a performance that featured nearly 20 student musicians in 4 different ensembles.
My Project
Keyboards are used everyday in my music classroom. Having a new working keyboard for our students will allow them to have access to a full 88-key instrument that can be used for practice, rehearsals, as well as performances throughout the year. In addition this upcoming school year myself and another music teacher will be starting an after school brass band.
This group plans to perform at sporting events as well as hosting our own concerts.
This trombone will give students a chance to learn a brass instrument as well as learn about the rich tradition of New Orleans style brass bands.
Our goal for this school year is to put on four programed musical performances that will include singers, rhythm players, and wind players. These concerts will be programed by the students and will include 7-12 graders. With your help our students at our academy will have a new reliable keyboard that will help inspire future musicians and music lovers!
