About My Students
Alexandra and Abby took the lead and have taken their class's ideas to heart and gave up so much free time to create this project to benefit the music department. They are bright, positive young leaders who want the best for our program and everyone in it!
I announced the idea to start a student-led project on Donorschoose.org to my 7th grade classes and was blown away by the positive support and enthusiastic responses. Students immediately started brainstorming and came up with so many amazing ideas for ways to help the music department. They identified needs and gave up their own time to help find a solution. They tossed around many ideas and reasoned through a lot of different options and collectively decided on a list of instruments we need help getting for our music department to continue to grow and thrive. We've broken the project up into two parts as these are the more expensive (yet essential) instruments that many of our students cannot afford to buy and therefore are missing from our ensembles.
Our chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society strives to empower our students through the arts! We teach our members to be great leaders in all facets of their lives from music class to sports, to Model UN to their daily social lives. Being a good leader will help students succeed in whatever career path they choose in the future. We are always looking for opportunities for students to take on leadership roles such as organizing fundraisers, concerts and events, being mentors to younger instrumentalists and so much more. These students took the time out of their lunch and homework time to work together to identify a need in their classroom. They were then able to write these persuasive essays and think deeply about reaching out to donors for a cause they believe in. That is a skill that they will serve them in life over and over again.
In Their Own Words
We need a plastic trombone, a regular trombone and a bass clarinet for our band program. We are very proud of our school's music department's success. The SMS band and chorus desperately need new instruments. Many students have wanted to play these instruments but we were unfortunately unable to provide for them. Together, we can eradicate this problem and ensure that the future generation of students can learn on the instruments they want.
With your help, we can achieve this goal and continue to improve the sound and creativity of the band program. In a sense, it'd be the entire music department helping and leading each other. The trombonists and bass clarinet players, would help teach the students learning these new instruments, and then everyone could serve a part in encouraging the people that are learning these new instruments. But, truly, it's a team effort, not JUST leadership from the two of us writing the essays!
Many of our students are not able to play the instrument of their choice due to the fact that we cannot provide them. We are part of a school system with high poverty levels and receive zero funding needed for music classes. With these instruments, our band program will expand and have all new and better sounds than ever before. This is exactly what we need to bring our band to newer levels and unexplored places. We hope that you will consider making a kind donation to our cause.
