My students need 14 pairs of binoculars to collect data for ecology.

My Students
Last year, my students explored New York wildlife with binoculars because of the generosity of people like you. Now even more young people want to get out and see the wildlife in our own backyard. Help us to get a pair of binoculars for every student!
Our students are city folk who know their way around a subway better than a forest.
We're an inner city high school with many low income students and many of our students have special needs. We implement project based learning. Fieldwork is an important part of our curriculum. Many of our students head to college when they leave us.
My Project
Students will use their binoculars during ecology fieldwork in a local park. They will ask original questions, collect data to answer them, and create written and verbal presentations to present to a panel of adults as part of a graduation requirement.
Ecology class is the first time most of our students use binoculars.
They are able to identify birds and they are amazed by the small details of bird behavior they observe, how a Robin lifts its head when it sings. Binoculars provide students with another tool of science to strengthen their understanding of the world, prepare them for college, and increase their awareness of the nature in our urban home and their stewardship of the Earth.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
