Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm an NYC Teaching Fellow who is in the middle of her second year of teaching in the Bronx. My school's mission is to help young women become leaders in all fields, but specifically science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. My school's mission is my mission. I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of students in NYC, particularly young women. More specifically, I became a Special Educator to advocate for my students to become advocates for themselves, to become lifelong learners and stay hungry for knowledge.
My students make up one of the most marginalized populations in the world as young women of color from the Bronx.
But my Special Education students face significantly worse odds statistically. Despite this, they embrace challenges and overcome obstacles head-on. They are inquisitive and have big ideas and questions about the world, how it works and how they can make it better. My students are some of the most remarkable young people I have ever had the chance to know, and I am honored to be able to share in learning alongside them as their teacher.
My Project
Through this professional development opportunity, I will explore the Amazon through the lens of place-based learning, inquiry, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). During this time I'll conduct field research, visit Amazon schools, and learn directly from indigenous communities.
Each day in the field will provide me with new knowledge, innovative ideas and exceptional resources designed to help me build direct connections to my classroom and bring science to life for my students.
I will have the opportunity to work alongside fellow educators and scientists to develop strategies for using the Amazon as a vehicle for incorporating standards-based inquiry, STEM, and sustainability education into my classroom.
