My Students
My students are 18-22 years old, come from diverse backgrounds, and have autism and intellectual disabilities. They are amazing, thoughtful, and determined. I am inspired by them every day, and they motivate me to do my best.
You may be wondering what makes my students so special.
To begin with, they are the most generous and kind students you will ever meet. They are always eager to lend a hand and contribute to the greater good. They have a "never give up" mindset. Despite obstacles and setbacks, they just keep on trying until they achieve their goal!
My Project
The community my school is located in is affectionately called "Exit One" due to the proximity to Exit 1 on the turnpike. The community has a high incidence of low socio-economic households. Many of the students do not have access to or the means to use laundry facilites in the community. There is a strong correlation between school absenteeism and lack of clean clothes.
The STEPS students will provide a laundry service to the students in the school who have a need.
I have created a curriculum for my students to learn all that is involved in home laundry as well as commercial laundry. The On the Job Training component of the STEPS program will be met as well.
The desired outcome of this program is two-fold; to provide a service to the students in the school as well as to provide my students with Independent Living Skills.
