Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you dread PE in school because of the running? I want my students to have access to different types of sports and have fun. Exercise doesn't have to be running around on a concrete track like rats in a maze.
My students live in an industrial neighborhood in Southeast Los Angeles.
The school is surrounded by warehouses and strip malls. There is no park within walking distance. It is a concrete jungle. Despite all this, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. Most students cannot afford to go to sports camps or participate in any extra curricular activities that involve fees. They don't have yards to play sports except for the grassy patch on the school campus. Our school is unique because it has a high population of special education students integrated with the general education students. Sports is a great way to help students integrate with special needs students on our campus.
My Project
My students have limited exposure to different sports. This will be their only opportunity to try out different sports. They will develop vocabulary as they learn the different rules of the sports and games. The equipment will also help improve the students coordination. Many students have never used a jump rope before, especially boys. For most of my students, they have never thrown a flying disc. They will not realize they are exercising as they throw and run after the flying discs through planned out drills. They will build strong character as they learn good sportsmanship through games played with the different balls requested. Some students need motivation to come to school. Through the use of this equipment, I can light a spark in some of my struggling students to want to come to school. My students all deserve a little happiness, even if temporary, from the release of endorphins. Not only that, but their self esteem will also rise.
I want students to see that exercise can be fun.
I want them to experience playing in a team sport. I want them to live a healthy life. For most of my students, school is the only place where they will get any kind of exercise. I want them to know that there is more to exercise than running laps around the school. I know that exercise will also help them with their focus and concentration which will benefit them in the class too, especially with the balance equipment.
