My Students
We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.
My kids are high energy and I am always searching for ways to keep them engaged while they learn!
Many of them struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.
We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!
My Project
Recess is only 20 minutes. By the time we pick the students up from lunch and take them outside, they may have 15 minutes. This is something I cannot control. For students who do not spend time outside when they are home, this is not a healthy option.
My kids wanted a room full of exercise bikes like the one in the article they read.
The school in the article had a whole room dedicated to exercise bikes, where the kids would ride and read. Of course my students wanted a room like that, but we don't have the space.
Well, the fitness bikes do not need an entire room, but they serve the same purpose.
The donations for the fitness cycle will provide students with physical activity, incorporating fitness all day. With the mini-exercise bike the kids will have the option to take a break and ride, or stick it under their desk, and use it while they are learning.
It will make a difference in their learning because it can improve attention span, memory, reduce stress and help with the effects of short attention spans and hyperactivity. Students will be able to work better collaboratively because they are calmer.
It will improve their lives because research shows that exercise benefits the brain in many ways, a fit body means a fit mind.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
