This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are right at the peak of their teenage years and have many activities to balance. They come home late from practices, stay up all night doing homework and spend the rest of their time glued to an electronic device. As their P.E. teacher, I know how important their mental and physical health is. It's important that I am able to teach them not only how to take care of their body, but also give them a space to quiet their mind, reflect on their goals and progress, and learn about balance between mind and body.
My students are all young women who love trying new things.
Most of our P.E. classes are split by gender and I see a huge increase in participation for the girls in a single-sex class compared to the co-ed classes. Many of my students enjoy physical activity (which makes my job fun!) and they learn not only the rules of sports, but teamwork, goal setting, anatomy, and how to be in charge of their own fitness so they have healthy habits to carry them through adulthood.
My Project
My students have been interested in yoga this year. Instead of getting them yoga mats I think padded exercise mats would be more multi-purpose. Students will be able to have their own space on the floor for core exercises, protection from the gym floor to prevent bruises and lower back pain, as well as providing safety when learning gymnastics skills like headstands, handstands and cartwheels. They love this stuff, but we lack the equipment to teach it.
I strive to provide my students with a variety of enriching activities.
Having a class set of mats will be a game-changer that helps me expose them to more challenging movements and also teach them about safety. I can only imagine a relaxing yoga class where the students are focused on their breathing and release from their troubles instead of complaining that their backs hurt laying on the hardwood floor doing crunches.
Thank you for your donation to the physical education department. These mats will be shared among classes so that ALL students have access to them for a wide variety of activities.
