My Students
In our school, we are working towards meeting the Common Core State Standards. In the past, we were given a reading program to follow each day. Now, we are facing the challenge of meeting the standards without having the materials needed to promote learning during the literacy block.
We are a Pre-K through 4th grade school in a large, urban setting.
We have 961 students. Our school is full of students from many cultures and backgrounds. We have a large number of students speaking English as a second language. There are many students with learning disabilities in inclusion classrooms.
The students at our school have unique sets of needs, problems, and challenges to deal with including basic needs, emotional needs, academic needs, and behavior and parental support.
My Project
In order to implement the Common Core State standards, I would like to have a set of the Common Core Exemplar Read Aloud Informational Texts for grade k-1, 2-3, and 4-5. The titles offered by this company serve as examples of what the standards require. They exemplify the level of complexity and quality the Common Core State Standards require all students to engage with. With teacher support, our students will learn how to read longer texts, use complex vocabulary, and identify sentence structure and organization.
As the reading teacher, I will have these books available for teachers to use with their classes.
It is in our elementary school classrooms that students begin their journey to be "college ready".
Our students must have the ability to comprehend complex texts. In order to promote student learning, it is necessary to have the materials designated by the Core to use during the literacy block. Your support in this project is essential so that our students may encounter complex texts.
