My Students
"Mrs. D, what time is it?" I hear this question numerous times a day despite the fact that we have a perfectly functioning analog clock in our classroom. Digital clocks have effectively handicapped my students.
I have a FABULOUS class of 22 fourth graders in Georgia.
We are a group 50% boys, 50% girls. I have a mixture of Caucasian, African American, Bi-racial, Hispanic, and Asian students. One child has qualified as gifted and 2 of my students are autistic. The majority of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. They are an eclectic mix of students, but they blend well together. I haven't taught a class this large in many years, but with budget cuts come larger class sizes. It is very hard to meet everyone's needs when you have a larger class. There is a TREMENDOUS gap in mathematical ability in my room (2 students place close to high school ability while 2-3 are placing closer to 1st grade level).
My Project
Even though we live in a digital age, students need to be able to tell correct time using analog clocks as well as calculate elapsed time. These skills are crucial in school, home, and the workplace. The materials that I have selected are meant to empower my students with knowledge in a fun and exciting way. I chose magnetic clocks, time bingo, individual time centers, and a CD Rom to use with my whole group. My goal is to make learning time fun and make students realize the importance of this skill. When someone asks them for the time... I want them to feel confident when they respond.
Time is not only a standard for students to master, but a life skill.
These resources will help my students immensely. How long will it take for my students to realize the importance of this skill and begin to feel empowered? I guess only time will tell.
