This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My class has the desire to read and improve their reading levels. However, small reading groups, where interventions occur, have been difficult simply because of the reading selections we have to work with. My students don't have as much motivation as they need to have to really make a difference and grow! Despite making small steps towards improvement and progress, there is plenty of room to grow!
Exciting, thrilling and the "I can't put this down" type books that are also at my students' reading levels is exactly what they so desperately need and want!
I reached out to our reading specialist and she loaned me some "hi-lo" chapter books. These are high interest chapter books that can be used with all our reading strategies but are written at lower reading levels. I tried them out for a couple of weeks and the results I experienced have been eye opening! After two weeks of using them, not only did they finish their respective groups' books, they were participating on a level I have never seen this school year, growing their confidence, and starting to really understand certain strategies that they had previously really struggled with! On top of all that, they didn't want to stop! They asked what the next book was and unfortunately, I only have one more set which will be done in a couple of weeks.
I'm so excited that the right books have been finally found that spark my students' motivation and passion to succeed and grow with confidence all while enjoying their journey! With your much appreciated support, these kiddos can kick things into another level of learning and finish off the year stronger than ever!
