Excitement with Literacy Skills

My students need Alphabet Bingo, Rhyming Bingo, Sight Word Playing cards and other fun literacy skill games to become confident readers.

My students are 5 and 6 years old with a craving to learn especially when it is fun!

At this age they are little sponges that soak up basic skills of learning. Many of my students arrive on the first day of school knowing very few letters or sounds. Some have trouble even knowing the letters in their names. Most come from lower income families and have diverse backgrounds. Some students are learning English for the first time. Most do not have the opportunity to attend preschool before starting kindergarten and need as much hands-on learning as possible to be successful in the classroom and in life.

My Project

During our reading block and I am fortunate to have 3 other adults pushed in to help run literacy groups. This allows every student to be in a group everyday! This project would allow all of us to incorporate fun learning games into our groups. Once introduced during groups, the students will then be able to do some of these activities in small groups on their own. The BINGO games have enough cards and pieces to allow us to play as a whole class. Kindergarten standards expect students to be able to read by the end of their kindergarten year. Reaching this benchmark in a fun way is how I plan on helping my students achieve this goal. Children love to play games and learning should be fun!

Giving to this project will ensure that my students will become confident readers by allowing them to have fun while learning basic literacy skills.

This confidence will follow them throughout their future education.
