A typical day in my classroom includes students participating in engaging experiments that help them unravel the mysteries of the scientific world. The items in this grant will enhance their scientific understanding through hands-on and inquiry-based learning.
I teach science to approximately 150 big-hearted fifth graders in our school's departmentalized Fifth Grade Academy.
In our academy approach, my talented team-mates and I focus on teaching and modeling respect, manners, and citizenship in addition to developing rigorous academic programs for our students. Though my students come from a variety of backgrounds and situations, they strive to overcome every challenge that comes their way. Our school is racially, culturally, and economically diverse, and we are proud of the culture of success we have created that celebrates our differences and the unique qualities of each individual.
My Project
Our fifth grade curriculum includes units on matter and heat transfer, both of which contain concepts that are challenging to master. My students will better understand heat conductivity as they measure the heat transferred between two containers. Using the heat transfer cans, they will internalize the idea that reflective materials conduct less heat to the contents of the container than dark-colored materials. They will better understand chemical reactions as they measure the mass of materials before and after reactions using the flasks I requested.
As my students explore and experiment using the requested materials, they will develop scientific attitudes and will practice using lab materials appropriately. In addition, through successful lab activities, they will develop confidence in their scientific abilities and a life-long love of, and appreciation for, science.
This project will make a difference for my students by putting high-quality scientific materials into their hands.
It will allow my students to visualize science concepts and develop true understanding of scientific principals. Through the use of these materials, I will prepare my students for possible careers in exciting STEM jobs.
