This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first book you read by yourself? Do you remember the pure joy and pride that you felt? Were you excited about reading? I want my students to able to answer "yes" to all of those questions. Their homes are not filled with books, but we can fill their classroom with books.
Gangs.
Drugs. Alcohol. Violence. Poverty. Parents with less than a high school diploma. My students are surrounded by these "strikes" against them. I will not allow for illiteracy to be another strike. I have 20 amazing students who are excited to learn and excited to read.
My Project
I check out 2 Elephant and Piggie books every month or so from the library for my students to read in the classroom. When we have our daily free reading, those books are always the first to be in hands. My students LOVE these books. They are funny and quick-paced and appropriate for 1st grade students. To have the entire series in our classroom would be wonderful! I was excited to read when I was in elementary and these Mo Willems books produce that same excitement and love of reading for my students.
