This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I refer to my first and second grade students as the "Brilliant Backpackers" because our classroom theme is traveling around the world. Backed by our motto of "Work Hard. Get Smart. Go Far"; we are both using and celebrating our mastery of state standards as we make our way around the world.

Despite the many challenges that face students growing up in a high-needs community, the "Brilliant Backpackers" are invested in their own education because they know that performing well in the classroom affords them endless opportunity in the world at large.

Clearly, reading tops their list of priorities.

My Project

Students are learning how to be purposeful when selecting books to read. Using the I PICK strategy, students spend quality time in the classroom library looking for interesting books-books that include words they can read and comprehend. In order to make the Brilliant Backpackers' learning experiences as authentic as possible I need to provide them with a wide selection of titles that cater to every reading level. Within these first few weeks of school, I have quickly noticed that our classroom library is in desperate need of books for our emerging readers. This collection of books will be especially helpful for students at the earliest stages of learning how to read. In fact, the set is specific to both the skills sets and needs of readers at levels one and two on the Diagnostic Reading Assessment.

With their picture clues and predictable texts, the books listed under this project will help emergent readers build the confidence necessary to make tremendous reading gains.

The texts will make our classroom library accessible to all students--positively impacting our class goal of becoming lifelong readers and learners!
