Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society.
My students are facing so many challenges during this pandemic, and last school year they still did their best to attend their classes on Zoom and stay engaged each day.
They amaze me with the many ways they are able to handle their multiple roles in their homes.
We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra supplies.
My Project
This year, I have the amazing opportunity and privilege to teach an Ethnic Studies course for our incoming 9th graders. It will be a special opportunity for students to learn about their own histories and the histories of Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) in the United States.
Please help me build a classroom library with books that critically examine the histories and experiences of Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) in the United States.
Many of my students have yet to learn the histories of people that look like them. Our classroom library will be an amazing resource for me and my fledgling Ethnic Studies scholars!
