My Students
How do you feel when you are HOT? Now imagine thirty students sitting in a classroom eyes glazed over, red, flushed faces, reduced energy or motivation and sliding across a wet floor due to the humidity!
My second graders attend a Title 1 urban school.
Each class has approximately 30 students, with no assistance. The majority of our students aren't on grade level, but eager to learn when given the right mix of encouragement and support from both parents and teachers. School is often a safe haven or retreat for most because it gives them a place to just be child and leave their worries momentarily. School is a place where they are developing their social skills through peer interactions, learning how to manage feelings, more appropriately through verbalizing and creating positive and respectful relationships. Yet the conditions we are asking our students to learn and perform in are not always the most conducive.
My Project
The majority of our schools are without air except for the library or media center, computer lab and the main office. Schools are rarely closed unless we have extreme heat advisories, however we expect our students to thrive and produce under such conditions and teachers to be highly effective.
This year we have hit record high temperatures and it will only get worst at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The result of elevated temperatures and low circulation of air causes is disruptive behaviors. Behaviors escalate because of reduced tolerance. In addition, our asthmatic students miss days and lose valuable instruction due to the air quality.
The simple fix of a portable room air conditioner unit will reduce disruptive behaviors, encourage 100% attendance, and keep the momentum and energy during the hottest days of the year.
Help us start the school year in a cool, comfortable learning environment.
