Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe."-John Muir In my classroom, my students are not simply learning science concepts, but examining how all concepts are interrelated. We investigate not only what is happening, but why it is significant.

The students at our High School have struggled even before becoming adults.

They are at a continuation high school because they could not succeed in the typical school setting. These students are at-risk teens, meaning they have taken some missteps and need extra guidance to get back on track. My students not only struggle with the burdens of a normal teenager, like learning how to study correctly, or bullying, they also face adult challenges like trying to find their next meal and taking care of their own babies. Most of my students just need someone to show that they care in order to motivate them to succeed.

My Project

My goal is to show students truly how interconnected our world is. The Vernier Environmental Probe Kit includes a temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, soil moisture, and conductivity probe-- all of which can be used for both my Biology and Earth Science classes. The probes will allow students to collect their own real scientific data. Students will learn how to use cutting edge scientific tools, as well as how to process the data they collect. When teaching biogeochemical cycles we will be able to measure the health of a water system by looking at acidity with the pH probe and dissolved oxygen probe. The soil moisture probe can be used when looking at plant growth. This is essentially important in educating our students on local ecosystems since our students live in California and we are currently facing a drought. It will allow us to experiment with water use and demonstrate the usefulness of drought-resistant plants.

Allowing my students to use real scientific tools will give them a sense that they are valued enough to be invested in, something they do not always have in their daily lives.

They will be able to use tools for practical application of scientific topics, creating excitement and hopefully igniting a passion in science for some students.
