My Project

Have you ever felt better after spending time with an animal? My students sure have. We attend school at El Capitan High School which just happens to have an Agriculture department with barns on campus. My students have built positive relationships with animals in those school barns which have resulted in reduced stress, the development of coping skills, increased communication, and more. This can be hard to accomplish when you have a disability. It is even more of a challenge when those animals leave. In order to provide students with consistent access to a therapy animal, we bought one.

Our therapy sheep is named Joy and she is as sweet as can be.

She was born earlier this year and we can't wait to start training her. She will be available throughout the day to any student who needs her in our department and the school as a whole. My students have been working to socialize her since she was born and look forward to seeing her throughout the week, especially during times of high stress when self-regulation is difficult. Our counseling department regularly uses trips down to the barn as a way for students to have their emotional needs met and become more successful throughout the day.

We all are really looking forward to seeing the positive impact that Joy will have on our class and the school as a whole. We will be tracking the number of students who go to see her throughout the year school-wide and talking with counseling to see how many students request her! We might just have to start our own flock to meet the needs.
