This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love science. They want to explore, investigate, experiment and invent, but they lack the financial resources at home and at school that provides beyond the basics.
Experiences, motivation, knowledge, and resources are very important for my students to break the cycle of poverty that is in their community.
My students and their families want them to do well in school, they just need opportunities. Help my students become future biologists, geologists, engineers, agriculturalists or whatever careers that interest them.
My diverse students are multilingual--English, Spanish, Mam, Qanjobal--and most come from working-class families. Many live with single parents, guardians, grandparents or in multi-household families. Regardless of their situation, their families say they want their kids to do better than they did.
My Project
Anyone who has been around young children understands the importance of hygiene and wellness. Every year, my students miss school, due to illness, and their families must often scramble to find childcare for them or miss work themselves to stay home.
My microbes plushies project will address health standards with vibrant 8- year olds who will learn that their bodies are also vibrant habitats for living things.
The goal of my project is to use the different microbe plushies to improve the health habits of my students, through new knowledge, demonstrations and practice, so they can be sick less often.
I will use the plush toys of different microbes to visually show how common ailments are the result of germs--living things that inhabit their surroundings and their bodies. For example, I'll use the rhinovirus plushy to teach about the common cold. I'll use the giardia plushy during my water unit to teach about drinking clean water.
This concept of microbes is HUGE since most of my students believe that it is cold temperatures and getting wet that causes them to become sick. Please help me address some of these miconceptions so my students know how to take better care of themselves.
