it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” This is a quote from the father of evolutionary biology, naturalist Charles Darwin. Last year my students became fascinated with studying the microbiological world of bacteria and other microorganisms under our digital microscopes that we generously received from a previous Donors Choose grant. I want to continue this level of direct hands on engagement for my students and me through this proposal. In our classroom, time is always used for learning about the world around us and our place within it.
I teach 6th-8th grade students science at a low-income inner city public elementary school. Over 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and I want them to continue to be on an even playing field with more affluent suburban school students in terms of access to highly engaging science classroom materials and activities. Unfortunately, our school has recently had to financially cut our science budget.
I often read aloud to my students, and one of their favorite books is "The Dawn of Life: A Cartoon History of the Earth." It is the story of how life evolved on Earth over millions of years, from simple bacteria to the highly diverse and complex world of today. It humbles them to know that if all Earth's biological time were placed within a 24 hour time-frame, then humans did not arrive until 11:58 p.m. With your help in funding this proposal, my students will be able to touch and see once living life forms as we read through the story. They will be able to compare organisms and learn such things as birds took flight due to the evolution of their hollow bone structure.
Please help us ensure that our inner-city minority students continue to receive the same level of highly engaging learning experiences as those from more affluent suburban schools. Your help in funding this proposal may be helping to create our next biologists who will continue to unravel the mysteries of who we are, where did we come from, and where are we going? I thank you in advance for your support!
