My Project

Much of what we do requires using data and information that has already been gathered and compiled. In order to fully understand the diagnostic process, I would like my students to directly participate in this data collection and organization component. If I had a Netbook to attach an EKG and a blood pressure probe to, my students could learn how to perform these medical measurements and record the information for class discussions and analysis. Students would be given the opportunity to take each other’s blood pressure and EKG each day and store the data for use and discussion in class. They would be working with the some of the same tools that doctors and nurses use. More importantly, they would learn the process of collecting medical data. Finally, working with EKG and blood pressure probes would enhance student understanding of why cardiac symptoms manifest as they do, and the physiological ramifications of the corresponding problems discussed in class.

Ultimately, the mastery of these fundamental medical skills is put to test when students apply their knowledge to diagnostic problems.

The fusion of classroom instruction and the application of the material using a hands-on approach with EKG and blood pressure probes connected to a labtop, makes learning more memorable, relevant and enjoyable.
