As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they show up to school every day with a smile on their faces ready to learn so they can grow up to be successful citizens of tomorrow.
My students are creative, clever and very curious about the world around them.
They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on developing a classroom climate of love and respect so they want to come to school and enjoy learning while they are here. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire our learners to continue on a path of academic excellence throughout their lives.
My Project
My students need games and activities that focus on comprehension of texts and responding to the text with writing to explore at Learning Center time, and after school tutoring. Our students will use these Finding Evidence Comprehension Kits and markers to explore their ability through small group intervention with the teacher! These activities will be used during Learning Center times throughout the day as we read and write while learning together. They will be able to use these activities during our whole group and small group time. Your generous donation to our project will improve our 5th grade classroom by building a stronger reader and writer, and in turn a better leader for tomorrow. This will change our students' lives for the better. They will love school and feel success while having fun learning!
