Evidence-Based Vocabulary Intervention

My Project

During a recent course I attended on the Science of Reading, I was reminded that limited vocabulary knowledge accounts for the vast majority of deficits in reading comprehension. I also learned that explicit vocabulary instruction is essential for bridging the comprehension gap. My students with language disorders are already at a disadvantage, with weaknesses in oral language placing them at greater risk for challenges with literacy. I am now on a mission to further my understanding of how to effectively and systematically teach vocabulary in my literacy-based speech therapy sessions in hopes of helping my students become skillful readers.
