When am I ever going to use this in real-life?
I am a Precalculus Honors and Algebra I teacher in a South Carolina high poverty high school.
Just about every single day in my mathematics classroom, my students ask me how the math I am teaching them is ever going to be useful to them once they are not in school anymore. Having always wanted to be a teacher, and pursuing that career for the past twenty years, I am not always very helpful to my students in answering that question in terms of other careers that my students might want to pursue. Due to the high level of mathematics taught in high school courses, it is more difficult to integrate real world activities that use math into my curriculum.
The book, Real Life Math, will aid me in developing projects for my students which will show them the significance of what they are learning in my mathematics classroom to actual mathematics scenarios in the "real world."
By funding this project, you will not only help me, as a teacher, grow in my knowledge of "real life mathematics," but you will also help to prepare my students for the challenges they will face in college and beyond.
