My Students

My students, in general, come from low-income, nontraditional homes in Onaway, MI where education is not always valued. However, our students come to school every day. Our average daily attendance is over 95%, and our students yearn for the structure and stable family atmosphere that our school offers them.

My students are proud of what they know and proud of where they come from, and they break the rules when it comes to traditionally impoverished students.

My students succeed at a higher level than the research says they should, and they are constantly looking for a challenge. This means that, as a teacher, I have to look for ways to challenge them and keep their interest in a quickly changing world.

My Project

I am so excited to get this book into the hands of my students. Many of my students have never left their corner of northern Michigan, so cannot imagine traveling halfway across the world to find a country that accepts them, but people who are suspicious.

Many of our fellow Americans are the descendants of refugees, and that number will only get bigger as conditions in the world worsen for many people.

I want my students to understand just how powerful the forces of discrimination and oppression are, and why people would leave everything they know to risk their lives traveling to a brand new place. I want to take my students out of their comfort zone and encourage them to think critically about the privileges they have as Americans and why we should help others to have those same privileges.
