Tables in our class will help us learn to collaborate. But where are we going to put all of our stuff?!
Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.
Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Unfortunately, our district has made enormous cuts to special education classrooms in our city. But, we can't let it stop us! The vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness of my students are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.
My Project
We are tossing desks to the wind and getting large tables for our classroom this year! My students struggle with social interactions and we strongly believe that using tables will help them build friendships and communicate better. Without a desk, my students will have no place for their belongings, such as pencils, dry erase markers, morning work binders, and communication books. The chair-back pouches we are requesting will be the perfect fix! These pouches will fit on the back of each chair, have a spot for their name, and will hold all of their belongings and keep them off of our table tops. They are sturdy and will definitely be used for years to come!
Without generous donors, we will never be able to obtain these materials with our school's very tight budget.
My students deserve the same materials as students in wealthier communities. Please consider standing in the gap for us and donating to our classroom. Thank you!
