My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students come from very diverse backgrounds and many are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. One challenge the children at my school have is not getting enough opportunities to use their hands and use their imagination. Many of the children start school lacking the motor skills needed to hold writing tools thus making it difficult to write and cut properly.
Another challenge my students face is lacking creativity.
Creativity is seeing things in new ways and the ability to think of something and making it come to life. In the 21st century, children are required to think creatively and critically in all subject areas. As technology develops and children are spending most of their free time using apps, electronics, and video games robots are doing for the children thus taking the creativity away.
My Project
My students need tempera paint, watercolor paint sets, paint brushes, and white construction paper. These materials give kindergarteners more opportunities to show what they know through art. Kindergarten students are expected to learn an abundance of skills that leaves little time to explore their creative side. In my class we use every opportunity to use art to show evidence of the skills and information they have learned.
Budgets have been drastically cut in the past few years making purchasing art supplies very difficult.
Without the help of generous donors, we can not afford even the most basic art supplies. Please help me to get my students the supplies we need to be able to show what they have been learning through art.
