We teach one hundred and forty-four energetic 3rd graders in our small coastal town in South Carolina. Our Students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds and represent various ethnicities, learning styles, and ability levels. Our students are hard workers but can become easily distracted. Our students are very busy, enjoy working together and love using technology. Every day we are learning new ideas and applying our learning during hands-on activities. We love to work around the room during partner work and stations. Our students are problem solvers and are eager to try new things. They enjoy having a choice in their learning and are developing their independence everyday.
My Project
Our students make a huge leap from being able to partition shapes and identify unit fractions to comparing, finding equivalent fractions, and plotting fractions on a number line in third grade. Teaching students how to compare fractions is such an abstract concept. Many of our students do not have the spatial awareness they need to solve more complex problems. By having the teacher have a large visual aid will allow the students to understand the concepts more clearly.
Modeling can be a uniquely powerful strategy.
Most effective teachers rely on modeling more than any other method. With these Magnetic Jumbo Fraction bars our third grade teachers will be able to model to the students.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
