Help me give my students a translation device so that it would be possible for me to speak directly with my parents who speak other languages as we work together online and when we transition back into school.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with a diverse group of students with disabilities in a special day class program. My school is a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood where most of the families struggle to meet their basic needs. Many of my students are learning English, and it is often difficult to communicate with their parents because I do not speak their home language.
My Project
Most of my parents speak Spanish, and I only speak English. It is hard to give them the support they need when I am dependent on other people to provide a translation. I would love to be able to communicate directly with them as I am providing instruction online. Having a translation device would make it possible for me to work with my parents as partners as we work online and when we transition back into the classroom.
Having a translation device would:
Improve my ability to communicate with the parents of my students.
Allow parents to take a more active role in supporting their children during online instruction.
Make everyone feel welcome and included in my classroom by providing primary language support.
