Everyone Should Have a Ball in Kindergarten!

My students need all kinds of balls to get them moving at recess and P.E.! They also need ice packs and band-aids in case they get hurt.

My Students

Kindergarten students love to move! Mine are no exception. I cannot help but smile when I see how much fun they have running around and goofing off at recess and P.E.

My students are an energetic bunch who are most engaged during hands-on learning and playtime.

They are kind, compassionate friends who tend to one another when something is amiss. They make my heart melt every single day.

My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco. Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle and play together throughout the day.

My Project

My students often ask for two things at recess: more balls and more space. We have our own kindergarten yard that provides safety and security for our young students. However, it does not provide very much space! Playing tag requires skillfully dodging playground equipment, weaving in and out of hula-hoopers, and taking curves like a champ. Kicking balls requires a soft touch; otherwise, they end up over the fence!

In response to their request for more space, I have decided to begin taking my class on weekly trips to a nearby park.

There is a huge field where students can run around and kick balls as high and far as they can without worrying about them flying into the street!

I need your help with their second request. My students want more balls! Currently we have 1-2 soccer balls, footballs, and basketballs. This means that our 44 kindergarten students often spend a lot of their recess time waiting their turn for the ball of their choice. Furthermore, when our only kickball goes over the fence, the entire game comes to a halt until it can be retrieved. While this teaches valuable skills like sharing and self-regulation, it also means that our students are not moving as much as they could be! When we go to the park, I want every child to be engaged in physical activity and fun. I envision some students simply kicking balls as far as possible and chasing them down, others playing catch with a partner, and some tossing balls high in the air and trying to catch them.

Having a larger quantity and variety of playground balls will allow for every child to spend recess moving and having fun! Thank you for supporting my students' social and physical development!
