My Project
My High School is changing. In recent years we have been fortunate enough to see a significant amount of diversity arrive at our school. For most of our history we have been a school district that did not need much of a multiple language learner program, because we did not have a lot of students that spoke languages other than English. In the last few years all of that has changed. In the years since COVID, the population of students that do not speak English as their primary language has tripled.
While we are enjoying the incresed diversity, we finding oursevles struggling from time to time communicating in the classroom.
The pocket talk translators are a tool to help bridge language barriers in our classrooms. My specialty is math and even though math is considered the universal language, there frequently are times when I need to clarify the vocabulary that accompanies my math lessons.
My department has thirteen math teachers, most classes have one or more students that do not speak English as their primary language. By having these devices in place, we can hopefully bridge any language gaps, and help improve communication between the teachers and the students
More than a third of students from low‑income households
