Help me give my students hand-on resourcesthat include: What's the Best Strategy? Problem Solving Centers, Hands-On Measurement Centers Complete Set and Hands-On Regrouping Kits to enhance early learning interventions in mathematics and literacy.
Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as attention-deficit, dyslexia, social-emotional, and autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with socioeconomic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My Project
My students are diverse learners who may struggle with processing and/or processing deficits that affects the pace in which they learn and grasp concepts. Given that I teach multiple grades, the population of my students change throughout the year as students are referred for specialized support through teachers and/or parents. As of January, the number of students in K-3 has increased and I want to ensure that I am meeting each student's needs through early learning, hands-on workshops.
Most of my students are visual learner; however, they better understand mathematics and literacy through the usage of manipulatives (sight and touch).
My goal is to ensure that my interventions do not exactly mirror what is taught in the general education classroom (paper and pencil), but provide diverse learners with extra special resources in which they touch, move and change letters and numbers in order to create their own thinking processes about concepts through their own unique experiences.
Hands-on resources include: What's the Best Strategy? Problem Solving Centers, Hands-On Measurement Centers Complete Set and Hands-On Regrouping Kits to help students with the difficult task of understanding which operation to use and how to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. Place Value is another area in which students struggle and the Student Place Value Practice Boards will serve a interchangeable visual aid. Literacy resources include: Touch & Read Phonics Word Match, Word Family Flip Books, Stack & Build Phonics Flip Books and Hear Myself Sound Phones, which will support my students as they begin to develop phonemic and phonological awareness - the building blocks to becoming emergent readers. The Special Needs classroom is typically underfunded and all it takes is the belief that #EveryKidCan!
