Everyday I’m Calculatin’

My students need self checking word problems and folder games. They need manipulatives such as counters, number lines, ten frames, and practice cards for word problems.

My Students

How often do you use math? I'm guessing you use math on a daily basis. I want my students to be successful as mathematicians. Math is such a tough concept for most of first grade students and the manipulatives (number lines, counters, and tens frames) will help math to be more hands on.

My first graders are a very active group.

They love to move around, and work better in small groups. My class is full of students that have a passion for math, but lack the tools needed to understand some of the math concepts. I teach at a title one school. 75% of the students in the school are on free or reduced lunch. Our school has a very large Spanish population.

My Project

The students will use the counters, tens frames, and other manipulatives during small group instructions. They will use the self check word problem puzzles during independent practice and during partner work. The folder games will be used year after year for group work, independent work, and partner work to practice and review skills that are taught during the year.

Math is so abstract, and the materials will help the students see math more concretely.

The hands-on materials help keep the students engaged and actively listening during math time. The folder games and puzzles will help math feel more like a game and help keep students on task during independent practice.
