My Students
"What will you be when you grow up?" I remember hearing this often when I was a kid. I was going to be a firefighter, just like my dad. Or, I'd want to grow up to be a mom, or a teacher, inspired by the wonderful role models in front of me. Now that I'm a teacher, I wonder what my students will be.
My early childhood special education students have been identified as having developmental delays, autism, Down syndrome, and other special needs.
They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old (preschool & kindergarten-aged.) My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning!
Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, and more than 75% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is a safe haven. Many of their families struggle to make ends meet.
My Project
I am requesting community heroes and helpers dress-up sets, dolls, and accessories to inspire the next generation of dreamers. These dress-up sets represent a variety of professions, from a chef, to a police officer, to firefighters, teachers, doctors, mail carriers, and even superheroes, rock musicians and more. My school district is committed to producing graduates that are "college, career, and citizen ready." I believe that journey begins at an early age with exploration and imagining about different career paths.
The young students in my class today will be tomorrow's heroes and community helpers.
I hope you will help inspire them to do great things in their communities as they learn and grow through dramatic play.
