My Students

Every child is special. I have many bilingual students who have parents that come from Mexico. Many of these students have never been introduced to the arts. Pre-k through 5th grade students come into the multi-purpose room for dance class. Dance is usually only for the privileged students who can afford dance as an extracurricular activity. Now all students have the opportunity to dance and reap the benefits.

Many of my students are from low-income single parent families.

As they line up to dance, it doesn't matter what race, economic level, or ability they have. No matter what ability or disability the student has, I will teach each student to dance. I modify my style to meet each child’s need.

Once one student asked about another,"Why is he in the wheelchair?"

I responded,"It helps him get around easier."

This student has Cerebral Palsy and loves to dance! When asked how he could dance if his legs don't work, I explained how he uses the ability he has. This student uses his right arm the most and with his upper body he can really move. Smiles all around as we dance together.

My Project

Perk Up Pre K and kinder through 5th graders with props! We need a Chromebook to play and control music, a portable speaker system, juggling scarves and tambourines. All good educators have a well-stocked bag of tricks, including child-friendly music in various tempos and a knowledgeable approach to young temperaments. And for those in the know, using props to aid the learning experience is an absolute must. Props can help visual or tactile learners better grasp new concepts, and, of course, wands and hats and balls are fun for everyone. Many students with disabilities in my class use their upper bodies more so the aid of a shaker or a scarf will really help the students move.

My classroom is in need of a portable speaker system and microphone so the students can perform not only in the classroom but outside as well.

Our students have the opportunity to be a part of a dance team and perform. A portable speaker on wheels would allow us to perform at various locations. One Chromebook is necessary because it is small and portable, and I would be able to have a wide selection of music for lessons including sing songs, cultural music, and current music. With a Chromebook, we will have access to ballet, tap, jazz, flexibility training, jumps and turns and line dances to fun tunes, too!

Through dance class, students develop spatial awareness, become more coordinated and pay more attention to others who are sharing their space. By communicating freely with the voice, face and body, students learn to express ideas with confidence, empathize with others from different cultures and backgrounds, and feel at home in their own skin. They are often happier at school. Song, music and dance can help students become more imaginative, self-aware and more collaborative with everyone.
