My Students
Every day I greet students with hugs and smiles at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in a rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.
They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.
They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students”, it is always "our students”.
My Project
This year I was able to be granted the opportunity to teach 5th grade Science and Social Studies. I teach Black and Brown children, and I make it a point to teach them their history. I always tell them that no one should ever have to tell you who you are or "water down" the curriculum.
The Civil War is a very uncomfortable topic to teach Black and Brown children.
However, it is my purpose to tell them the truth and not sugar coat the instruction. I want them to have books in their hands that represent our current democracy.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have made history no matter what anyone's political stance is. My students have learned the hardships of Black people and how women and especially women of color were not granted the same rights as men and white women. They have very limited resources in their home that teach them about their history. We are currently studying government, Civil War, and other moments in history and because we are virtual students can't check out books from my classroom or the school library. I want them to have books in their hand that relate to our current historic moment and they are knowledgeable of who will be in office for the next four years.
