Every Successful Leader Was Once a Beginning Reader
Help me give my students sets of magnetic letters and 20 magnetic whiteboards in order to focus on blending, segmenting, and spelling during our small group UFLI phonics lessons.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a teacher of dual language learners, our goal is biliteracy - reading, writing, speaking, and listening in both English and Spanish. At this point, 87% of my third-graders are unable to properly read or write in either language.
Since the COVID-19 Pandemic, the gap between what students should be able to do and what students can do has grown significantly.
We have switched from a Phonics workbook-type curriculum to following the science of reading using UFLI which is an explicit phonics program developed by the University of Florida that focuses on foundational reading skills in order to promote reading proficiency. During our small group, WIN time, (What I Need Time), students are separated by ability level into specific groups; we do this cross-grade level, along with support from our interventionists and paraprofessionals in order to see every child, every day.
The magnetic letters and magnetic boards will be used during our UFLII lessons. Students will be able to encode and decode regular and irregular words by manipulating their magnetic letters. As dual language learners, my students struggle with the Spanish vs. English letter sounds, having visual and kinesthetic manipulatives can support students' reading foundational skills which will promote reading proficiency.
