Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"We believe that all children can learn to read and write. Not just children in inclusive classrooms and not just those in schools with healthy finances. Not just those who can see or hear or walk or talk or who have intelligence perceived to be at an acceptable level for learning" ('Comprehensive Literacy For All' by Erickson and Koppenhaver, 2020).

The majority of my 16 K-5 students are discovering their voices through writing for the very first time.

Each student who does not yet have the motor skills to write letters with a traditional pencil needs an 'alternative pencil' which is a tool that gives them access to all 26 letters of the alphabet. The possibilities are endless: it can be a keyboard, an alphabet chart, alphabet stamps, alphabet magnets, letter tiles, a sensory bin with hidden letters, or even legos with letters written on them. Each child will need something a little different according to how their body moves, what they can see and hear, and what draws their interest. In order to find each child a writing tool that works for them, I am asking for help to expand my library of materials. Alphabet stamps of various sizes will help to reach students who enjoy art and manipulating things with their hands. Letter tiles will go in sensory bins for children who enjoy messy play. And finally the alphabet bean bag letters will be a pencil for students whose bodies need to be in motion all of the time!

By donating to this project, you will be helping 16 children on their first steps to being writers, communicators, storytellers and self-advocates. Thank you for your consideration!
