My Students
All of my students who come for library class, or even when I collaborate with their teacher enjoy having a story read aloud to them.
Studies have shown that the benefits of reading out loud to children can include: longer listening ability, larger vocabularies, and better understanding of concepts.
The younger students in K-2 love to talk all about the story, sometimes too much during the story, while it is harder to get students in grades 3-5 to discuss or answer questions about the story. I believe I have a solution to this problem that will give every student a voice at the appropriate time.
My Project
I love the excitement I get from my kindergarten and first grade students when I read aloud a story to them. However, they all want to tell you a story all at once about it, which is great because they are building text to self skills. But, I want to be able hear them all and give everyone a chance to be heard by their peers! The Qball would be a great tool to solve this problem. I could toss it to a student who wants to share allowing all eyes on him/her because she/he has the microphone. Then we can continue to share until the time limit for share time is over.
In grades 3-5 it is a totally different story; "deer in the headlights" is the best metaphor for when you call on a student to speak or give a response to a story.
I want to find any way possible to encourage more participation with students in these upper grades.
They tend to think they're too cool to respond or share a story, but I think if I literally threw a ball into the mix, I would get their attention and cause them to want to participate in questions related to: text to self, text to world, text to text, and comprehension questions which will benefit them when they have to complete mClass reading testing in the classroom.
