Every Student, Every Beat: Tubano Drums for All

Help me give my students Tubano drums to enhance the music education experience for my students. Currently, we lack enough individual drums to allow each student to fully participate during our percussion units.

My Project

My students are passionate, eager learners who come to music class ready to explore sound, movement, and creativity. They love collaborating, making rhythms, and building their confidence as musicians. However, many of them don’t have access to musical instruments outside of school, so our classroom is often their only opportunity for hands-on music-making. What makes my students special is their ability to turn even the simplest tools into something magical—they inspire me daily with their enthusiasm and their willingness to learn and create together.

By providing individual Tubano drums, I can give every student the chance to fully engage in our percussion activities.

For example, we frequently work on rhythm ensembles where students layer simple and complex rhythms to create full percussion pieces. With enough Tubanos, each student will have their own drum, eliminating the need to share and allowing for more active participation. We will use these drums in lessons focused on steady beat, syncopation, call-and-response drumming, and even cultural units exploring traditional West African and Caribbean drumming styles. These experiences will help students develop key musical skills such as rhythmic accuracy, listening, collaboration, and expressive performance.

My goal is to create an inclusive and dynamic classroom where all students can fully participate and feel a sense of ownership over their learning. Having individual Tubanos will empower my students to explore rhythm with confidence and deepen their understanding of music through hands-on practice. These drums will not only enhance their musical growth but also strengthen social-emotional skills like teamwork and perseverance as they create music together.
