Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many schools often lack adequate education in the arts, and while crafts may find their way into the classroom, music often does not. However, I argue that an introductory education in music is a necessity for students of all ages.
Music has been proven to support cognitive function, provide emotional release, and encourage collaborative thinking while celebrating culture and fostering community.
In my Kindergarten classroom, I have collected the few instruments the school has, mainly triangles and jingle bells. With this small array of instruments, the students were excited to imitate songs played on the board. Even my unengaged students tuned in when it was music time. I would like to increase the options and availability of our classroom instruments to allow the students choice and to expose them to different cultures and sounds. Eventually, I would like to start a music program at the school, so that everyone may have access to explore their connection to sound and music.
This opportunity for self-expression should be fostered at a young age to additionally demonstrate well-being and the power of practice.
With this age group, where social-emotional skill development is at the forefront of our work, musical awareness is a necessary tool.
