Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I have yet to meet! In just a couple of weeks, we will go from being strangers to spending most of our days together. While I have not met them I know they are resilient,
In their small amount of time in school, they had to adapt to a new and often scary way of life and are currently awaiting the return of a full in-person school year after this confusing and challenging first year of school online.
I want to greet them with support and opportunities for the hands-on learning and community building they largely missed out on this past year and provide them opportunities to teach me and each other about themselves and what they are learning.
My Project
These tools will provide opportunities for multiple and ongoing projects. This past year I had the fortune of using my photography background to guide students to showcase who they are and what they care about through images they took and shared. I was able to do this through a grant and gave the cameras to my students to encourage them to continue documenting their growth, interests, and important moments. Now I seek to continue with these projects with a new set of students who are returning to school eager to socialize and share experiences. I plan to offer them these materials so they can teach me and each other what they are learning, what their perspective is, and what they want to know more about. With cameras, they can take pictures of their personal lives to share with the class, capture something they have made in class that they are proud of, focus on something they find particularly interesting on a field trip, and collaborate to come up with their own projects!
