My Students
My students attend a country school on the big island of Hawaii where many kids have not traveled more than 20 miles from home. Because of the Pandemic, their movements are even more restricted. Staying at home has its own stresses for students, but parents may be struggling as well. These kids are hungry for opportunities to explore and learn about their own Island, and how it fits with the rest of the world. Currently the rest of the world is dealing with the CoVid19 Pandemic. This has directly impacted our islands both economically and culturally. Our backyard is literally the Pacific Ocean, but it has not completely protected us from the virus due to air travel. We created a blue ticket system that recognizes students who demonstrate our HA values. These include Belonging, Responsibility, Excellence, Aloha, Total Well-Being, and Hawaii. We would like to reward these students with items that help reduce stress.
My Project
In our community their is a great need to keep students fed and many receive free and reduced lunch. We would like to give students the opportunity to treat others in a pono or good way and earn snacks for doing this. We would like to offer a reward for good behaviors as we teach them. This is part of a larger SEL or social emotional learning program we have started. Tghe pillars of this program focus on Belonging, Responsibility, Excellence, Aloha, Total Well-Being ane Hawaii. In the midst of a pandemic that has taken so much from our youth, we feel that helping them enjoy a snack could go a long way.
