My Students
While our school is the largest elementary school in our school district, our Title 1 school has a small-town, family feel to it. Many of my students' parents went to this same elementary school as well. We are located in a small, rural town near the coast of South Carolina. My students are excited to learn new things and are always willing to go above and beyond expectations to become better at whatever skill they are working on. This drive and determination will take them to great places in their lives.
My Project
Reading is the most fundamental skill any student will take away from school. In an increasingly complicated world that is flooded with complicated text students need to be comfortable and confident in their consumption and analysis of the written word.
Research has clearly demonstrated that carefully structured independent reading is the single most effective tool teachers have for improving literacy.
By adding these books to my classroom library, the new books will give students the chance to choose from a wide variety of age-appropriate texts. Reading will be augmented by a variety of writing activities to encourage student engagement, and silent reading time will allow me to touch base with each student individually to check for understanding and fluency. These individual conferences give me a chance to identify specific areas of weakness and to develop student-specific reading strategies to help every student reach and exceed the reading expectations set by our state standards.
