Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title I School with the Houston Independent School District. The pandemic most impacts our families as they are mainly from low income backgrounds to start with. Most lost their jobs and are struggling to put food on the table.
When this crisis started, we did not know how many days we would be out of school, so we prepared paper-based packages for students, but now they are already finished.
Some parents can connect with us remotely using the internet at home and a tablet or computer. Still, the majority have a smartphone, that belongs to one or both parents, with limited internet access.
Although the district purchased and made available a myriad of online resources, the reality is, most families either don't have an excellent device to use them (a phone can be challenging to use for most educational apps since their screen is too small) or worse, don't have access to a reliable, unlimited internet connection at home.
My Project
Being a teacher in this challenging time is even more demanding than it is under "normal" circumstances. Technology stopped being a luxury in education some years ago, making it every day more critical to satisfactorily address the needs of every student.
Now, with the recent crisis due to the Coronavirus pandemic, our job as teachers has to rely exclusively on the ability to connect with our students online.
Accommodations for every single kind of unique situation on our students are being addressed by teachers, specialists, school leaders, district leaders. Only one condition, related to limited access to technology and connectivity due mostly to low income, has been left out of the equation every time.
Every actor in the education community has been trying "fixes" to this situation by providing the technology and connectivity the student needs by making it available AT SCHOOL. Now that schools are closed, we need to move fast towards serving our communities at their HOMES.
With these materials that I'm kindly asking for, I will be able to address two major problems that my students are facing right now; the lack of a device that is compatible with the apps that the district is making available for our students to continue learning from home, and the lack of internet connectivity that would make it happen.
