My students need oil pastels, colored chalk, sharpie markers, and liquid watercolors to create vibrant art. They also need quality paper for optimal results.

My Students
I use the mantra "you have to make it pop" to encourage students expand their limits and put in a little extra effort in "finding their voice" as they learn to express themselves through visual arts. Academic studies reveal that Visual Arts improve learning in reading, math and core subjects.
Our school is a year old with a tight budget in a large district.
The community is burgeoning with younger families, resulting in another new school opening nearby. Despite the budgetary pressures of growth, we implement programs which promote holistic learning, a heavy emphasis on Humanities, and strive to create avenues which open successful learning to each child and their unique capabilities. My students come from rural neighborhoods in a hard-working, middle-class community. Each day, 240 students attend my art class at our elementary school. Our model is in two-week rotations; therefore, I teach a total of 720 first through sixth grade students in each six week cycle. These students range from academically gifted to those who are more challenged in traditional classroom learning. Each student eagerly anticipates new learning experiences even when these activities require new or undeveloped skills.
My Project
I love to hear my students ask, "What are we going to do today?" Creative art experiences enhance core learning that can be measured. I follow the core standards to give the age-specific training these students need. We need art supplies in both quantity and quality to support our objectives. Heavy-duty construction paper provides the required platform to use watercolor for example, which will hold up to this medium. Thin stock paper, which does not lend itself well to accepting liquid medium, is all that is available through current resources. Utilizing watercolor, chalk and oil pastels offer varying mediums which produce visual differences and inspiration supporting students amazing work that often exceeds my expectations. Tissue-paper for papier-mache, paper cutter and other tools are required to prepare project materials. Given proper materials along with proper instruction, these young students are capable of learning the skills they need for self-expression.
Visual arts open the doors to student academic success.
Students who struggle with reading, math and other core subjects can benefit from alternative forms of mental stimuli such as visual arts. Visual arts training promotes learning across all subjects and improves cognitive ability. Success in the arts also enhances student confidence needed to perform well in school as they produce original artwork. In order to produce quality work, students deserve basic supplies.
